In March 2024, Inventus’ Richard White, Jason Myks, and Amon Taakimoeaka alongside local leaders Kennedy and Peni ,travelled to Tonga to connect with schools and communities through rugby league. What began as coaching clinics at Tupou College, Liahona, Leihona, and an open community session, became something far greater: the beginning of a life-changing opportunity for a group of young men.

Fast forward 21 months, and five of the players selected from that visit have gone on to thrive across both rugby union and league pathways here in Aotearoa. Four of the boys are now officially signed into the New Zealand Warriors U17 and U19 development squads, a massive milestone in their athletic journey.

They came from different villages and schools across Tonga, Tupou College, Liahona, Tonga High School, and Atele ,and were placed in New Zealand schools including Rotorua Boys’ High School, Wesley College, and St John’s College in Hastings. What unites them is their work ethic, humility, and willingness to fully commit to school, sport, and opportunity.

Their journey has now been proudly acknowledged by the Warriors themselves:

What It Took

Over the past 18 months, the boys have embraced every part of the experience, schooling, training, and community life. They showed up for early-morning sessions, travelled long distances to attend Warriors development trainings, and demonstrated a level of maturity well beyond their years.

This effort was recognised in late 2025 when they were invited to a six-week “train and trial” block with the NZ Warriors, leading to their official squad inclusion for the 2026 Harold Matthews and SG Ball Cup campaigns.

What’s Next

We’ll be returning to Tonga in March/April 2026 to continue this kaupapa. With the right support, the next wave of promising young players will again have the chance to build better futures through sport, education, and connection.
